Nothing the three traveling companions expected of Lina and Zelgadiss' return would prepare them for what would happen in the next few hell-raising minutes to follow...

"Gourry-sama?"

"Hmm?" The blond swordsman kicked at the bedpost as he lay staring at the ceiling.

"How much longer do you think Xelloss will take to return our friends to us?" Sylphiel laid her head against the mattress, feet curled under her atop a wool mat beside the bed.

"I wouldn't know Sylphiel. Xelloss takes his own time to do things." Gourry yawned. "But I do wish he'd hurry the hell up. I miss fighting Lina for the next meal." He turned his head and grinned sheepishly at the shrine maiden.

Amelia sat apart from the group next to the small fireplace, staring absently into the orange flames. "I miss Zelgadiss-san too." She planned on working up enough courage to kiss him on his return. After all, she did love the chimera and would do everything in her power to help him in his quest for a cure. She smiled and spun around in her seat to face the others. "So, lets go down to the diner and get something to eat."

Gourry sat up and yawned. "I was kind of comfortable and I don't need anything just yet... I know, why don't you go down and bring us something up? Unless you want to go with her, Sylphiel?"

The raven-haired woman stirred from a slight doze. "Huh? Oh?well...okay, what would you like me to bring you back dear Gourry?"

Amelia smiled and bit her lip. Gourry didn't feel like eating just yet? Was she hearing right? Yet it wasn't surprising, for neither of them had much of an appetite since the disappearance of their comrades.

"You be the judge, you know what I like..." He smiled at her warmly. Sylphiel returned the smile and rose with a stifled yawn. "Okay Amelia-san, lets get a little something..."

Amelia nodded and was already running out the door and down the steps. Sylphiel shook her head at the princess' eagerness and followed at her own relaxed pace, not before winking at Gourry on her way out.

Then the peace of the old inn was disturbed in a heartbeat.

Amelia had reached the bottom and had just stepped into the dining area when the room suddenly darkened. Every single candle blew out and the room tremored as if an earthquake was taking place. Shouts and shrieks of confusion and fear were heard about the room and Amelia sank to the ground, eyes wide and staring as a black rip appeared in the middle of the room and three figures materialized. Then, one by one the candles relit themselves, or more rightly, a certain mazoku snapped his fingers and they lit at his command. He waved his arms out at the disturbed occupants.

"No worries my good people, just leave calmly please." He wore his usual smile and turned to see the very shocked and grateful Amelia running at him.

"Xelloss! Oh you brought them back! Oh... oh I must give you a hug, even though you are the evil monster you are!"

Xelloss grimaced and pulled the over exuberant princess off of him. "Save your thanks; there's a slight problem; you see..."

Lina's voice shattered anyone's hearing within ten feet of her. "Slight problem! Slight problem my ass! GO to HELL Xelloss!"

That about did it for those that were left to watch in awe the scene taking place. They were exiting the building in much the same manner as spooked cattle, until not one was left and only the innkeeper was left staring, open mouthed at the whole situation.

Lina twisted Xelloss' arm behind him in a painful lock and made him bend to the floor. "Amelia! This is a matter of life and death! Zelgadiss is dying! You have to save him!" The sorceress eyes were wild with fear and Amelia felt her stomach knot up in a painful twist.

"Zelgadiss is...what?" Her mind flew into a black void momentarily and she fought to keep her consciousness.

Meanwhile Lina had let go of the miserable Xelloss and instead took hold of the princess' shoulders and shook her violently. "Amelia! Snap out of it. While you go into shock, Zelgadiss' life force is slipping away! He's dying damn it, and all you can do is blank out? Damn you, Amelia. You can't flake out!"

Amelia's eyes rolled unsteadily in her head as she tried to stop Lina from shaking her senseless. "Okay, let me go... and let's get him to the room in a hurry!"

"That's more like it!" Lina replied in haste. She hooked up one of Zelgadiss' arms over her shoulder and had Xelloss do the same. Amelia took the lead and sprinted up the steps, almost running headlong into Sylphiel.

"Amelia? What's-" She began, then cupped her hand over her mouth at the arrival of her other friends she's so missed. "Zelgadiss! Lina, what hap-"

"No time for explaining! You have to heal him!" Lina snapped out furiously. "He might already be dead!" She choked in anger. "Remember what I said I'd do to you Xelloss? Pick up the pace!"

"Hai!" the mazoku shuddered at Lina's venomous reply. She'd never sounded so fierce before not even over Phibrizo taking hostage and near death of her guardian Gourry.

With not another minute spared, Lina and company poured into the room where Gourry still lay, relaxing.

"Get off the bed Gourry!" Amelia shouted out as she kicked open the door, eyes wide with fear.

Gourry hit the floor ungracefully as he fell off the bed. "Huh? Hey!" He peered over at them from his place on the floor. "Lina your?" He frowned as he saw Zelgadiss' lifeless body being dragged in. "Zelgadiss?"

Lina said not a word to the swordsman as she helped Xelloss straighten the chimera on the bed. Biting back a sob, she moved away from the one she loved so dearly. "Amelia, Sylphiel, do your work." With that she turned and fled from the room trying to hide the tears running down her face in endless streams. She felt nothing when she tripped and went sliding down the stairs to the floor fourteen feet below.

Gourry took one last look at his chimera comrade and then pursued Lina, heart going out to her. He looked down, grievously, at the redhead's shaking, crumpled, form at the foot of the stairs. "Lina! Oh Lina-san!" He thundered down the steps and gathered the sobbing sorceress into his strong, muscular arms. "Lina, tell me what happened, please!"

"Xe-lloss did it...he-" She chocked on her tears. "... beat Zelgadiss almost to the point of death." Lina's breathing came out unevenly and broken and she felt her head growing light. She was beginning to hyperventilate as she continued to wail, clutching Gourry's tunic until her knuckles where ghostly white. "I'll kill him if he dies!" She managed to add before she passed out, head rolling back against the swordsman's arm.

Gourry's eyes glistened in hate for the mazoku. For the first time he realized just how very heartless bastards, the mazoku race, really were. "Lina-san, I'll make him pay dearly!" His features twisted in concern for the petite sorceress he held in his arms. But what held him in complete awe was the fact that Lina, Lina Inverse, Enemy of All Who Live, the Dragon Spooker, Sorcery Genius, was actually crying her eyes out. Lina never had cried before, not even a sob. Never in the whole time he'd traveled with her, and he wondered if she'd ever cried for him when the Hellmaster had taken him away.

Sylphiel, face pale with concern, laid her index finger to Zelgadiss' neck, searching for a pulse, with no success. "Oh, no heart beat, pulse, nothing. Amelia, this is really bad... I'll have to try the resurrection on him. Recovery won't work, but I don't have to tell you that."

Amelia clenched Zelgadiss' ice-cold hand and bowed her head in silent prayer, tears running anew. As Sylphiel wasted no time in beginning the life-restoring spell, Amelia sensed her strength gradually being pulled from her. She fought the slight weakness that passed through her body and thought instead how much greater the strain was on the shrine maiden. Yet, Amelia didn't care what the consequences were, as long as Zelgadiss came back to them. To me... She willed him with every fiber of her being.

see the storm is broken
in the middle of the night
nothing left here for me
it's washed away
the rain pushes
the buildings aside
the sky turns black
the sky
wash it far
push it out to sea
there's nothing left here
for me
i watch it lift up to the sky
i watch it crush me
and then i die

speak to me baby
in the middle of the night
pull your mouth
close to mine
i can see the wind coming down
like black night
so speak to me
like the winds outside
it's broken up, pushing us
hear the rain fall
see the wind come to my eyes
see the storm broken
now nothing
speak to me baby
in the middle of the night
speak to me
hold your mouth to mine
'cause the sky is breaking
it's deeper than love
i know the way you feel
like the rains outside
speak to me
~the sky is broken

Where am I? Darkness wrapped around a forlorn figure standing rigidly in the middle of a field of tall golden grass on the endless flat plane. The wind lashed out violently, causing the expansive meadow of gold to ripple and sway unceasingly. She shut her eyes and winced as the wind gust increased, sending her hair flying wildly, slapping against her face like dozens of tiny whips. Lina dropped to her knees and bent over, shielding her body. The darkness increased profusely and seemed to suffocate her to no end.

"Stop it!" She wailed. "Why am I alone? Where am I?" She spun around in the barren field, wrapping a shredded, bloodstained cream cloak about her. "Why have you left me?" The sorceress whispered, her life's essence sinking into a dark abyss.

"I never left you."

Lina's eyes widened and she snapped up her head, seizing her neck with a painful intake of air. "Where are you?"

"You left me, Lina..." The familiar voice rang out into the void, shattering her mind. "You..."

"Zelgadiss!" She shouted with all her might. "Show yourself to me, please!"

"You ran from me..."

"Zelgadiss!"

"You left me to die alone!"

Lina doubled over and clenched her arms so tightly she drew blood. "No, no, no! No! It's not true! How could you say that to me!" Her whole body shook in terror and panic, heart hammering in her chest, blood running cold.

An icy hand clutched her shoulder and brought her to her instantly to her feet. "Why did you leave me?"

Lina's eyes glazed over at the sight of the man before her, legs shaking under her. Was this her Zelgadiss? His features were empty of all emotion and body so very sickly, it seemed as though the wild wind would snap him in two. The chimera's mouth was still stained in crimson and even as he spoke fresh blood seeped out the corners of his lips. But his eyes, his eyes were haunted, the look of one betrayed and without hope. She backed away, unable to tear away from his torturing gaze, and tripped over backwards. A deep pit of nothingness gaped open wide below her and drew her in. The last she heard pierced her soul and wounded deeply. "You let me down!"

Lina let out a heart-wrenching scream, arms flailing reaching for a hold to break her fall...

"No, no...n-" She murmured and tossed about, before her eyes snapped open and found herself down in the lounge. She lifted her aching head only to look Gourry in the face. He had fallen asleep, head tilted to the side and rested against the wall. "Th-then I was dreaming? Oh gods..." She slid out of the swordsman's arms while he snored softly, seemingly unaware of Lina's movements. Without the light of the large chimney, she nearly tripped over the foot of the stairs as she backed slowly away. Letting out a shaky breath, she began her way up the flight of stairs, heart pounding away in her chest. She went as swiftly as possible without causing a great din on her way up.

No, she couldn't manage. Hand on the doorknob, she froze, fear sizing hold of her mind. So very afraid of what she might find on the other side, she fought long in the dark of the narrow hall. She felt her mind would break as she slowly turned the handle, then shaking her head wildly, fell against the door and slid to the floor, burying her face in her hands. I can't go in there. What if he's? Gods no. But I can't bare it anymore. Her neck tightening painfully as if an invisible noose was tearing at her flesh. Clenching her teeth, she stood once more, biting back a gasp. She swung the door open and upon entrance, almost fell over a shadowed form on the floor.

She bent to the ground and felt around. "Zelgadiss?" She then ran her fingers through long soft locks of hair. "Sylphiel..." She thought it had been dark in the lounge, but here she couldn't see anything. The small window at the far side of the room was closed and the blinds drawn. Lina crouched where she was and sighed. For the first time since their disappearance, she considered casting magic. Lina produced a weak light spell, just enough to see what was around her, smiling slightly in satisfaction.

Her heart lurched in her chest as she saw his quiet form resting on the bed a couple feet away. Taking the greatest of care not to trip over the shrine maiden, she drew near to him, taking a place on the edge of the bed. "Zelgadiss-sama," she breathed, "please don't have left me." She lay her head to his chest straining her ears for... did she hear a heart beat? Or was it her own heart pounding in her ears?

Her forehead wrinkled in silent concentration. Still, she could not recognize her heart beat from his. If indeed he had one, it must be faint. She gave up on trying to listen out for him breathing as the room was occupied with two others. Heck! I'm beginning to feel ridiculous! Zelgadiss, damn you! Give me a sign you are still with us? Please! She gritted her teeth and passed a hand over his face, and without another hesitation, bent down and kissed him ever so lightly on the lips. "Zelgadiss, please live for me!" She breathed, clutching his tunic and deepened the kiss, tears traveling down her cheeks.

Lina slowly pulled away from him and brushed her hand across her face. His lips were warm and the dead where cold as ice, so that only meant one thing. Zelgadiss! I knew you could fight death, just hang on... Her body all but jumped out of it's skin when she heard Zelgadiss take in a long draw of air, and his free hand flexed on the covers. Lina's eyes flickered with renewed passion and she took his hand in hers and laid it against her tear soaked cheek. Ignoring the nagging thoughts of how Amelia would react in the morning, she lay down beside him and hooked her arm gently around his middle, letting the darkness lull her to sleep.

Six days later:

"Lina-san, I shall be returning to my father's kingdom shortly." Amelia sighed, chin resting on the table, watching Gourry and the redheaded sorceress scarf down loads of food, with mild amusement. "Lina-san? Are you listening to me?"

The sorceress forced down a large turkey leg before regarding the princess. "Yes, and?"

"Before I get caught up in all my royal duties, will you two please tell me what happened in the other world?"

"In short, Amelia, I'd rather battle the Hellmaster again." She replied flatly and took a long sip of hot tea.

Amelia scowled and turned to face Zelgadiss, whom had his back turned to the rest of the group. "Oi, Zelgadiss-sama, will you be a little more descriptive?" She folded her arms and stubbornly stared at his back, until he finally turned in his seat and regarded her calmly.

"There really isn't much to tell... an endless sea of white sand, we almost starved to death: like I said, nothing much to tell." He smirked slightly as the princess pulled a sour face.

"Zelgadiss!" She bit her lip angrily. "You are hiding something from me, I just know it. I don't like being in the dark."

Lina choked on her bread roll and cleared her throat. Amelia never knew about the night she'd spent beside Zelgadiss six days previous. For in the morning, Amelia was still sound asleep and Lina had left the room without being discovered.

"What you don't know, can't hurt you, Amelia..." He replied with a hint of boredom. Standing, he stretched slightly and made his way to the door, where he slipped outside for some fresh air.
